Sparr Heights Community Center
Speaker: Arik Joukhajian
Program: "A Dry Heat: Desert-Dwelling Fungi in California"
The Mojave Desert is home to many fungi, both seen and unseen. Deserts appear more flush with life after a sudden burst of rain (a familiar concept to mushroom hunters), yet fungi are ever-present. Arik will discuss both seasonal changes of mycorrhizal fungi associating with the Eastern Joshua tree, as well as the year-to-year fluctuations of post-fire soil fungi following the devastating Dome Fire of 2020. See beyond the rich plant diversity of the Cima Dome (which you may have witnessed while taking shortcuts to Las Vegas) in this review of local desert fungi.
